Installing NetHack 3.0 Binary
for the Macintosh June 1990
=================================
Please read the NetHack license (from within the game) for details
on distribution and usage of Macintosh NetHack 3.0. The NetHack license
must accompany the official Macintosh NetHack 3.0 binaries contained in
the file "NH3.09.hqx". These binaries were created from the NetHack
source code (updated circa June 1990) which may be obtained anonymously,
by various means, from "uunet.uu.net" (192.48.96.2) under the archive
directory "comp.sources.games".
For convenience, this installation document should also accompany
the Macintosh NetHack 3.0 Binary package.
*** Unpacking Macintosh NetHack 3.0
To avoid problems, older versions of Macintosh NetHack should be
removed from your hard disk. This includes old "save" and "bones" files
and the "NetHack prefs" file which may be in your system folder. Also,
rebuilding the "desktop" file afterwards will help to avoid problems.
You'll need approximately 2MB of hard disk space to unpack Macintosh
NetHack 3.0 from the encoded archive. A BinHex 4.0 decoder (either the
application itself or the "Decode BinHex File..." feature under the
"Other" menu in Stuffit) should be used to generate the Stuffit archive
"NetHack3.0pl9.sit" from the text file "NH3.09.hqx". Stuffit (v1.5.1) can
then be used to extract the hierarchical folder called "Playground" from
the archive. The "Playground" folder contains 4 files/folders:
"NH3.09.doc [Installation Guide]", this document.
"Dungeon", a folder containing the application NetHack 3.0i pl9, and 17
auxiliary support files. During and after play, the "Dungeon"
folder will also contain "save" and "bones" files. A special
"NetHack prefs" file will be created in the "System Folder" when
the first game is played. This is where the options chosen under
the "Set Options..." entry of the "File" menu are stored.
"Level" files are also kept in the "System Folder" during play.
"NetHack 3.0 Guidebook", a text file that serves as a primer to NetHack.
It does not contain spoilers and is a must read for beginners or
for those who want a better understanding of the game.
"Open NetHack", a special Macintosh NetHack auxiliary file that can be
used for two purposes: (1) You can reset/erase the scoreboard
using this file by duplicating it and naming the copy "record".
If this new "record" file is placed in the "Dungeon" folder,
replacing the old "record" file already there, then the high
scores will be completely reset/erased. (2) Double-clicking this
file will launch NetHack.
*** Acquiring BinHex 4.0 a/o Stuffit 1.5.1
BinHex 4.0 is available via anonymous ftp from:
sumex-aim.stanford.edu (36.44.0.6)
cd info-mac/util
<set binary transfer mode using the "binary" command>
get binhex4.bin
quit
You'll need to use a macbinary transfer of the file "binhex4.bin"
from your host machine to the mac to recover the application. Once you
have BinHex 4.0 you can then return to the sumex archives and retrieve
"stuffit-151-.hqx" and "stuffit-15-doc.hqx" which are BinHex 4.0 encoded.
These files, which can be ascii or text transferred, are in the same
directory as BinHex.
*** Starting a game of Macintosh NetHack 3.0
You should, of course, first read the guidebook to become familiar
with NetHack. There is a Macintosh-specific help section available from
within Macintosh NetHack 3.0 that is accessed by the "?", help command.
Macintosh NetHack was designed to run in a minimum 750kB partition
under MultiFinder. A larger partition, up to 1MB, may be desirable.
For 1MB Macintoshes, running with only the Finder, it may be necessary to
remove custom inits and cdevs to free up precious memory. There should
be at least 1MB of free disk space each time you play Nethack to provide
room for the temporary files that Nethack creates during the game.
The application can be launched in the traditional Macintosh ways.
Additionally, the application can be launched by double-clicking on any
Macintosh NetHack 3.0 auxiliary file. If the clicked-upon auxiliary file
was not a "save"-type file then you'll be presented with a startup dialog
box where you can enter your character name, character preference, gender
and a few other starting options. Double-clicking on a "save"-type file
bypasses this startup dialog.
The dungeon maintainer may prefer to keep the "Dungeon" folder
hidden (and perhaps invisible). In this instance the "Open NetHack"
auxiliary file can be placed anywhere on the hard drive and be used to
alternatively launch the game.
*** Play under Explore-mode
This option allows you to explore the dungeon and avoid death,
unless you want to die at some point. The price you pay is that your
progress does not get recorded on the high scores list. This mode is
suggested for those interested in experimenting with difficult features
of the game. Your starting inventory will include a wand of wishing
which you can use to acquire desirable magic items
(i.e. "a blessed +3 long sword named Sunsword").
*** Play under Wizard/Debug-mode
Wizard-mode gives the maintainer additional powers that should be
used to debug various features of the game. It is suggested that you
not spoil your game by abusing the privileges of wizard-mode and that
you reserve using this mode for legitimate debugging purposes. Your
additional commands will be documented under the "?", help command.
Wizard-mode is normally inaccessible. To enable access to wizard-mode
follow these steps:
1) Start a game.
2) Change the default name in the "Set options..." entry of the File
menu to "wizard". Click on "Save" to record your preferences.
3) Quit this game and then start another game (not from a save file).
4) Use the name "wizard" in the starting dialog box. A normally hidden
check box will be revealed that enables access to wizard-mode.
Select this box to play under wizard-mode.
5) Remember to change your name to something other than "wizard" and
re-save your preferences to play subsequent games in the normal way.
*** Incompatibilities
NetHack 3.0 should run without problems in all standard Macintosh
enviroments. It is possible that 3rd party enviroments a/o inits may
cause problems, however none are known at the time of this release.
We seek your help and ask that you report any conflicts you may find.
*** Support
Problems, comments, suggestions, thanx, etc. should be directed via
e-mail to "nethack-bugs@linc.cis.upenn.edu", Subject: Mac NetHack pl9.
This mail will be forwarded to the members of the Macintosh NetHack
Development Team. We've worked hard on Mac NetHack and we hope that
you enjoy the game.
